The doctor is in. And so are the lawyers. Following up on our look at the top firms used by finance and insurance companies, Corporate Counsel affiliate ALM Legal Intelligence has crunched the data on which firms are tops for the healthcare industry. The data, taken from ALM's 2017 Who Represents America's Biggest Companies Survey, is based on information collected from PACER for the 2016 calendar year. ALM Legal Intelligence focused on Fortune 1000 companies, NLJ 350-sized firms and other small but active firms.
Here are the top ten firms that have the cure for the legal issues that ail healthcare…
1. Littler Mendelson P.C. – The leader of the healthcare pack is… Littler Mendelson. The San Francisco-based global labor and employment firm has more than 1,300 attorneys in more than 75 offices and apparently, the reach to match in the healthcare space.
2. Wilson Elser Moskowitz Edelman & Dicker - Right behind behind Littler was Wilson Elser Moskowitz Edelman & Dicker. The firm, founded in 1978, has 34 offices in the U.S. and one in London. Nearly 800 attorneys work for the firm.
3. Reed Smith - Coming in third place is Pittsburgh-based Reed Smith. The firm has 26 offices and 1,536 attorneys.
4. Husch Blackwell - Next on the list comes Husch Blackwell, which organizes its lawyers in offices in 18 cities across the U.S. around industries, rather than practice groups. Clearly this approach has worked quite well in the healthcare space—given the firm's high spot in the rankings.
5. Holland & Hart - Rounding out the top five is Holland & Hart. The 460-attorney strong firm is based in Denver and has a number of other offices in the U.S., mostly out west.
6. Latham & Watkins – A truly global firm, Latham & Watkins ranked sixth on the healthcare countdown. The firm has more than 2,600 lawyers in 31 offices located across 14 countries.
7. Sedgwick – Though the insurance-focused Sedgwick dissolved earlier in 2018 after 85 years in business, it didn't do so without leaving its mark on the healthcare space. The firm comes in at No. 7 on the list.
8. Cohen Blostein & Ayala (formerly The Law Office Of Jay Cohen) - This Floridian firm is small but mighty. The firm, which recently changed its name and added new partners, ranked eighth in the healthcare countdown. Cohen Blostein & Ayala has offices in Fort Lauderdale and Orlando.
9. Wilson Turner Kosmo - One of the largest woman-owned firms in California, San Diego-based Wilson Turner Kosmo took ninth place in the healthcare representation race.
10. Baker, Donelson, Bearman, Caldwell & Berkowitz – Last but certainly not least is Baker, Donelson, Bearman, Caldwell & Berkowitz. The firm, based in Memphis, boasts more than 750 attorneys and public policy advisers across 22 offices, mostly in the southeastern U.S.
