There was a time when the biggest pressure on companies in environmental, social and governance issues came in the form of PR and marketing challenges posed by activist shareholders and proxy advisory firms.

But regulators increasingly are joining the fray by expanding ESG reporting requirements that could pose financial liabilities for non-compliant companies, a panel of attorneys said Thursday at Corporate Counsel’s General Counsel Conference Midwest, in Chicago.
