The product manufactured by United States Steel Corporation is tough and resilient by definition. Shouldn’t the company’s in-house attorneys be, too? In naming Suzanne Rich Folsom general counsel and senior vice president–government affairs, the company has forged a relationship with a lawyer whose experience in tough corporate environments has prepared her for the steel industry’s legal and compliance challenges.
Folsom, who began work at the Pittsburgh-based company’s headquarters in early February, has developed a reputation for working through difficult legal and compliance situations. She was most recently general counsel and chief compliance officer of security solutions provider Academi LLC (formerly Blackwater Worldwide), where she revamped the company’s legal and compliance program, helping to repair a reputation tarnished by the company’s involvement in the Iraq war. And before that, she was deputy general counsel and chief regulatory and compliance officer for American International Group (AIG).
