Plaintiff attorneys Trent Speckhals of Speckhals Law and Robert Roll of Lourie Chance Forlines Carter & King secured a $40 million medical-malpractice verdict out of Bibb County State Court against a pharmacist represented by Matthew Barr of Hawkins Parnell & Young on Nov. 9. However, despite egregious injuries and a sympathetic jury, Speckhals’ client may only get a small fraction of what the jury thinks she’s owed.

Plaintiff Khaliah Shaw was a patient at River Edge Behavioral Health when she was prescribed Lamictal, also known as Lamotrigine, at a dangerously high dose. As a result, she developed a life-threatening rash—blistered skin that sloughed off her body, lost fingernails, toenails and hair and had lung damage and other health problems—all of which led to her spending over a month and a half in the hospital, according to the plaintiff’s account in the pre-trial order. In their words, “she will never be the same.”
