On a July afternoon in 1994, Robert Fiske, Jr., then the independent counsel investigating the Whitewater real estate scandal, was headed back to New York from Washington, D.C. He had just delivered a report that put to rest conspiracy theories that the Clinton administration was somehow involved in the death of former deputy White House counsel Vincent Foster, Jr. Over the course of a three-hour train ride, recalled The American Lawyer‘sthen editor, Steven Brill, not a soul recognized Fiske. He had held no press conference that day-”just issued the report, let it speak for itself, and got on the train,” Brill noted in an article at the time.
