SAN FRANCISCO — The Santa Clara County district attorney’s office is starting to make good on its promise to identify child sexual assault cases that could be affected by videotapes of thousands of medical exams never seen by defense counsel.

The DA will send an initial batch of about 50 defendant names and court docket numbers to the public defender’s office today, said Assistant PD Nona Klippen Hughes. Each file will come with a standard letter from the DA’s office and a privacy agreement that must be signed before prosecutors will send the actual footage. Michael Fletcher, head of the DA’s sexual assault team, said he will send files to private defense attorneys as well, but did not know how many. At issue are videos of up to about 3,300 victim exams, filmed between 1991 and 2008.
