SAN FRANCISCO — Longtime San Mateo County District Attorney James Fox said Thursday he plans to apply for U.S. attorney for California’s Northern District. He had previously said he wouldn’t seek reelection next year when his current term ends.

His interest in the federal job puts a wrinkle in jockeying that has so far mostly involved former federal prosecutors with white-collar practices .
