SACRAMENTO — Businesses that offer free eats, cheap ski lift tickets and other discounts to furloughed workers would be shielded from discrimination claims under legislation unveiled this week by a Southern California state senator.
Senate Bill 367 by Gloria Negrete McLeod, D-Chino, states that freebies offered solely to laid-off and furloughed employees don’t constitute a violation of the Unruh Civil Rights Act, a sweeping state law that bars discrimination on the grounds of gender, race, color, religion, ancestry, national origin, disability, medical condition, marital status or sexual orientation.
