SAN FRANCISCO — For four decades, Jerome Falk Jr. has been celebrating victories and grabbing headlines for his appellate work.

In 1972, he helped put a temporary stop to capital punishment in California. Some 30 years later, he got a court to uphold an $82 million award against Ford Motor Co. Then he worked to overturn an even bigger award against Genentech Inc.
