SAN FRANCISCO — Piles of evidence the government hoped to use to link Barry Bonds to steroid use are out, but the testimony of current and former professional athletes is in.

That was the message today from U.S. District Judge Susan Illston, who delivered her tentative ruling on the fought-over evidence at a motions hearing in the slugger’s perjury case.
