SAN FRANCISCO — When Richard “Chip” Lutton became Apple Inc.’s chief patent counsel 10 years ago, the company was only filing about two dozen patent applications a year.
Then Apple introduced the iPod, and patent protection became a top priority. Last year, Apple applied for close to 1,500 patents to help protect the iPod, iPhone and iPad — Apple’s most lucrative inventions — from infringers.
