In September 2008, BP PLC had a massive blowout at a gas platform in Azerbaijan that bore striking similarities to the Deepwater Horizon disaster that killed 11 workers in the Gulf of Mexico in April, according to U.S. diplomatic cables leaked by WikiLeaks.

BP was lucky to evacuate all 212 employees at the doomed Azerbaijan facility safely, Britain’s Guardian newspaper reported.
