So, you’ve decided to serve on a nonprofit board. That’s great! Directors with a corporate counsel background bring a valuable perspective to the nonprofit board room, and contribute meaningfully to the success of the charitable mission. It can be a terrific “fit.”

Yet, before you head off to your first board meeting, there are a couple of things you ought to know about the nuances of the nonprofit form, and how it differs from the proprietary environment you’re used to in the law or business. Nothing that should cause you to reconsider your decision to serve, mind you. Rather, just some thoughts to better prepare you for nonprofit board service, to enable you to “hit the ground running.”
