As a profession, lawyers tend to be adequately fed; so ethics ought to come first for us. Yet our hunger to exploit every advantage for the good of our client sometimes messes with our ethical compass. Where lines are grey, advocates will push lines. But the California Supreme Court is due to issue an opinion in the next few weeks that is likely to add considerable black and white to the line between ethics and advocacy.
