In May 2008, when Julia DeWitt’s then-husband was arrested for abuse and domestic violence and she filed a pro se complaint to obtain a protection order, she found unexpected allies in her corner.

Pine Tree Legal Assistance, Maine’s legal aid organization, contacted DeWitt after learning from a domestic violence advocacy group about her filing. “Pine Tree stood by my side through everything,” DeWitt said. “It’s hard when you’re scared.”
