In Washington’s first look at the issue in five years, congressional Republicans are exploring proposals that could have a substantial impact on asbestos litigation.

Unlike during previous debates, lawmakers aren’t concerned that too many lawsuits are flooding the courts, and they’re not talking about creating a massive federal settlement fund. Instead, they’re looking at possible changes to the 50 or so settlement trusts that together pay out billions for asbestos claims each year.
