The American Civil Liberties Union of Massachusetts is suing the Justice Department and the Department of Homeland Security seeking information about the government’s use of automatic license plate readers.
The ACLU filed suit in Boston on September 25 and asked a federal judge to order the agencies to release the data. It also asked for attorney fees and costs. The organization invoked the Freedom of Information Act after the agencies failed to respond to a July 2012 records request.
