Named for the British city that helped give birth to the Industrial Revolution, Alabama’s largest city is less about its own iron and steel industry these days than its growing health care, higher education, telecommunications and financial-services sectors.

The University of Alabama at Birmingham is a major employer — as is its medical center — and HealthSouth Corp., Regions Financial Corp. and regional headquarters for AT&T Inc. and Wells Fargo & Co. call the Magic City home. International manufacturers including Hyundai Motor Co., Honda Motor Co. Ltd., Mercedes-Benz U.S. International Inc., Volkswagen A.G., Airbus SAS and ThyssenKrupp A.G. have also moved into the area.
