Attorneys Honored for Service

Tonight at its 10th anniversary program, The Burton Foundation, a nonprofit academic organization, will present its 2009 Awards for Legal Achievement in recognition of effective legal writing.
The event will be held at the Library of Congress.
The Lifetime Reform in Law award will be presented to former New York Chief Judge Judith Kaye.
U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia will be honored with the award for the Book of the Year in Law. "Making Your Case: The Art of Persuading Judges." Justice Scalia wrote the book with Bryan A. Garner.
Following is a list of New York attorneys who will be recognized and the articles for which they were nominated:

Richard K. Neumann, Jr., a professor at Hofstra Law School, was a National Award winner for his outstanding contributions to legal writing eduction.
Jeffrey S. Trachtman, a partner at Kramer Levin Naftalis & Frankel and the firm's pro bono committee chair, was honored by the nonprofit organization Cause Effective with its 2009 Legacy of Service Award.
Mr. Trachtman co-founded the organization in 1981 and served as its board chair until 1994. He remained a member of the board for 28 years until he recently stepped down.
Cause Effective provides management consulting services to nonprofit organizations, teaching clients to build effective boards, manage successful events, and maximize their fundraising potential.
On June 9, the Nassau County Coalition Against Domestic Violence honored Stephen W. Schlissel, founding and managing partner of Schlissel Ostrow Karabatos in Garden City.
Mr. Schlissel was recognized for his efforts on behalf of victims of domestic violence and to expand the education of the public concerning domestic violence.
The award was presented by Judge Hope Schwartz Zimmerman, administrative judge of the Nassau County Family Court.
Mr. Schlissel also was recently honored by the Nassau County Bar Association for establishing and organizing its annual golf and tennis classic, which has been renamed the "Stephen W. Schlissel We Care Golf and Tennis Classic."
Hunton & Williams was a recipient of the 2009 Corporate Citizenship Award from Sodexo Inc., presented at Sodexo law department's fifth annual Spirit of Partnership awards reception on June 4.
The award recognizes businesses who partner with Sodexo to further enhance its corporate citizenship initiatives.

The Fidelity & Surety Law Committee of the American Bar Association's Tort Trial & Insurance Practice Section has recognized Gottesman, Wolgel, Malamy, Flynn & Weinberg for its community service and participation in the committee's organ donor drive.
The New York-based firm registered the most new organ donors of the committee's member firms.
