Robert Gangi said Friday he will step down in 2010 after nearly 30 years as executive director of the state Correctional Association. The group advocates on behalf of state prison and local jail inmates and promotes programs to divert offenders from incarceration to treatment for substance abuse and other programs.

Mr. Gangi, 65, said his departure would be effective Oct. 1, 2010, and that he agreed to the lengthy notice to give the Manhattan-based group time to make the transition to new leadership.
