A Philadelphia jury awarded $3 million to the estate of a 19-year-old college student who died in the Hahnemann University Hospital emergency room because of a rare heart defect.

Adonis N. Smith fell to the ground while playing touch football Feb. 22, 2007, and was transported to the ER, according to the plaintiffs’ pretrial memorandum in Smith v. Hahnemann University Hospital . Smith died three-and-a-half hours after arriving at the emergency room.
