Former state Supreme Court Justice Frank J. Montemuro Jr. — remembered as a “pioneer” for Italian-Americans in and outside the legal profession and a jurist who worked until he was forced to stop — died last week due to complications from Alzheimer’s disease.
Montemuro, 86, who former Governor Robert Casey tapped to fill a vacancy on the Pennsylvania Supreme Court in 1992, worked on the high court until the mandatory retirement age of 70. He would go on to serve the next decade on the state Superior Court, returning as a retired senior judge from a previous stint on the intermediate appeals court.
