As the defense opened Tuesday of a Catholic Church official charged with endangering two men who say priests sexually abused them, defendant Monsignor William J. Lynn’s defense counsel sought to emphasize that Lynn could take no action to address sexual abuse without the imprimatur of Cardinal Anthony J. Bevilacqua as archbishop of Philadelphia.
Bevilacqua died last year.
