“It’s more important than ever that we be out there and out front on this issue,” says LCLD chair Rick Palmore of General Mills. “We don’t want to just hold the line, we want to move it forward.”

Whether the group can actually effect positive change — or at least prevent significant backsliding — remains to be seen. Michele Coleman Mayes, general counsel at Allstate Corporation and a member of LCLD’s board, says she can understand if skeptics think, ” ‘Oh my God, another organization dealing with diversity.’ “
