This year—for the first time since starting our Litigation Department of the Year project—we wanted to single out individual lawyers who’d had extraordinary results for their clients, whether at trial, on appeal, or, in the case of one of our winners, untangling what caused a historic collapse that helped set off the broader financial crisis.

To that end, we invited firms to nominate the attorneys they felt we should consider for recognition as Litigator of the Year. Each nominee was subjected to the same kind of rigorous vetting that our editors and reporters undertook in judging the broader competition. In the end, we chose three lawyers as winners of the Litigator of the Year honor and five others as finalists. Congratulations to them, their firms, and all those who participated.
