It’s always good for a corporate law department to look itself hard in the mirror, even if the picture isn’t always pretty. Not just about how your corporate legal department (CLD) is doing in terms of managing costs, or whether you’ve improved your relationships with law firm partners (although those are always good things to take stock of)—it’s also great to analyze your CLD’s technology maturity level.

Many of us like to think we’re technologically savvy, but being savvy is just one part of maturity. Savvy implies an understanding of technology and how to use it. Maturity is multidimensional. A technologically mature organization optimizes its current technologies without spending money unnecessarily on solutions that aren’t needed. It uses technology for a larger purpose—not just saving time on legal invoice review, for example, but gaining efficiencies and value for the business.
