Arbitration has been one of the hottest legal topics in recent years, with the U.S. Supreme Court broadly upholding the right of businesses to force consumers and employees to resolve disputes through individual arbitrations, instead of through more consumer-friendly class actions. On Monday the court continued that trend when it held that DirecTV Inc. can force consumers to individually arbitrate disputes over its early termination fees.

The ruling was the third career Supreme Court win (out of four tries) for Christopher Landau, who heads the 12-lawyer appellate group at Kirkland & Ellis. Landau has two more high court arguments this term.
