Bain & Co. has turned to lawyers from McDermott Will & Emery to defend against a rare U.S. Justice Department lawsuit alleging the consulting firm has unlawfully withheld documents investigators have demanded as part of a probe into Visa’s proposed acquisition of Plaid.

On Friday, three lawyers from McDermott entered appearances in a federal court in Boston on behalf of Bain, which was accused earlier this week of stymying the Justice Department’s antitrust investigation into the proposed deal. Bain’s litigation team includes Mark Pearlstein and Matthew Knowles, both Boston-based partners in McDermott’s white-collar defense practice, along with associate Annabel Rodriguez.
