The last U.S. Supreme Court term and its subsequent rulings have been as contentious as they have been damaging to the credibility of the high court. And while the justices have been under unparalleled public scrutiny for their rulings and opinions handed down during the last term, the upcoming one promises to be just as contested.

This edition’s cover story by Marcia Coyle examines some of the high-stakes issues to be argued at the lectern starting October. The justices have added hot-button issues to the docket, including voting rights, affirmative action, LGBTQ+ discrimination and immigration, to only name a few. Court watchers will also keep a close eye on Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson’s Supreme Court debut. As the court’s approval ratings are at a historic low, it remains to be seen if the justices will regain some footing over the upcoming months.
