Mary Smith, the new president of the American Bar Association, said she plans to address some of the biggest issues she sees facing the legal industry now, including artificial intelligence, threats to democracy, and adapting to a post-pandemic world.

Under Smith’s leadership, the ABA has created two new task forces—those focused on American democracy and AI. The task forces are charged with considering and forming recommendations in areas such as depoliticizing the administration of elections and how AI is incorporated within the law and legal standards.
