SAN FRANCISCO — A federal judge rejected a federal court employee’s effort to get federal health benefits for her wife, but gave U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit staff attorney Karen Golinski time to file an amended complaint.

The ruling by U.S. District Judge Jeffrey White didn’t address the Defense of Marriage Act, but rather a narrower question of whether 9th Circuit administrators could countermand the executive branch’s denial of benefits for Golinski. She and her partner were married when that was allowed in California.
