Airbnb on Thursday sued New York City and the Mayor’s Office of Special Enforcement, asking a judge to prevent the city from enforcing a new law the company claims amounts to a “de facto ban” on short-term rentals set to take effect in July.

In their court papers, Airbnb calls the new requirements in Local Law 18 “extreme and oppressive” and says the demands placed on hosts will chill use and should be declared invalid and unenforceable.
