Attacks on the press have long existed, mostly by authoritarians who cannot tolerate criticism or dissent. But a free press is solidly embedded in our constitutional democracy and is resilient enough to withstand such attacks.

Nonetheless, according to the U.S. Freedom Press Tracker, attacks on journalists, news sources and the media generally have increased significantly since Donald Trump targeted the press as “the enemy of the people.” But while norms and conventions of appropriate behavior are being tested almost daily, one place that has been relatively secure is the newsroom.
