An immigration attorney says it’s now time for the U.S. Supreme Court to review whether Border Patrol agents need a warrant to search cellphones at ports of entry.

In a petition to the justices, Dallas-based attorney George Anibowei said the federal circuit courts are deeply split on the issue and the Supreme Court should hear his appeal of a ruling by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. Anibowei called it a question of national importance given that border agents inspect hundreds of millions of travelers at ports of entry each year.
