On May 20, Stuart Rabner becomes the longest serving chief justice in the history of New Jersey. That is his 6170th day of service as chief justice, surpassing the tenure of Chief Justice Robert Wilentz who resigned due to illness effective June 30, 1996. Chief Justice Wilentz would have turned 70 and subject to mandatory retirement in February, 1997.

Chief Justice Rabner, a summa cum laude graduate of the Woodrow Wilson School at Princeton in 1982 and cum laude graduate of Harvard Law School in 1985, clerked for the highly respected federal District Judge Dickinson Debevoise before joining the United States Attorney’s Office, where he ultimately became chief of the Criminal Division. Governor Jon Corzine appointed Rabner his chief counsel upon assuming office in January 2006 and attorney general later that year.
