New Positions
Annapoorni “Anna” Sankaran has joined Holland & Knight's Houston office as a partner. Sankaran is a commercial litigator who focuses her practice on bankruptcy and bankruptcy litigation. Formerly a shareholder in Greenberg Traurig, Sankaran has experience in trial and appellate work in state and federal courts and also has represented clients in mediation and arbitration.
Toby M. Galloway, former U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission regional trial counsel, and Ronak V. Patel, former deputy securities commissioner of Texas, have joined Winstead as shareholders in Winstead's Fort Worth and Austin offices. Galloway has become co-chair of Winstead's securities litigation and enforcement practice. Patel is a litigation attorney who has extensive regulatory experience with securities regulatory agencies across the United States.
Will Becker has joined Locke Lord's Dallas office as a partner in the firm's tax department. He focuses on federal income tax, franchise tax and sales and use tax matters, with an emphasis on mergers and acquisitions, capital markets, REITS and real estate joint ventures, among other things.
New partners in Houston-based Porter Hedges are: David Martin, real estate; Sean McChristian, construction; Scott Muehlberger, energy transactions; and David Salton, litigation. The firm also recently appointed James Thompson as its property and finance practice group leader and Eric Wade as litigation practice group leader.
Seth Reich has joined Dallas-based Caldwell Cassady & Curry as an associate. Reich focuses his practice on patent litigation and complex commercial litigation.
Michael Van Ellis has joined The Bassett Firm in Dallas as an associate. His practice focuses on transportation, personal injury and premises liability litigation.
Emilio Nicolas, an experienced content and information attorney, has been promoted to partner in Jackson Walker's Austin office. Other attorneys recently promoted to partner in the firm are: Pete Hyndman, transactional attorney, Dallas; George Hinchey, real estate attorney, San Antonio; Jamila Brinson, labor and employment and litigation attorney, Luke Gilman, trial and appellate attorney and William Stowe, trial lawyer, all based in Houston.
Take Office
Barrett Reasoner, a partner in Gibbs & Bruns in Houston, has taken office as the 2018 Houston Bar Foundation chairman. Other new officers are Jeffrey Kaplan, LyondellBasell, vice chair, and Jim Hart of Williams Kherkher, treasurer.
Awards
The Houston Bar Foundation recently presented its annual awards for pro bono service to Vinson & Elkins, outstanding contribution to Houston Volunteer Lawyers by a large firm; King & Spalding, outstanding contribution by a midsize firm; and Frye, Benavidez, and O'Neil, outstanding contribution by a small firm. Keri D. Brown of Baker Botts and Scott A. Bresk of the Harris County Attorney's Office were both honored for outstanding contributions by an individual. Exxon Mobil Corp. and Halliburton were recognized for outstanding contributions by corporate law departments. Austin M. O'Toole, attorney at law, was recognized for outstanding volunteer service to the Dispute Resolution Center for the third time. Russell C. Ducoff received recognition for longevity of exemplary service to the center. Sam M. “Trey” Yates and Mike Day, both of Trey Yates Law Firm, were recognized as authors of the outstanding legal article published in The Houston Lawyer.
Elected
Christopher B. Trowbridge, a partner in Bell Nunnally & Martin in Dallas, has been elected chair of the board for the Thanks-Giving Foundation, a nonprofit that owns and operates Thanks-Giving Square, a private garden and public space for reflection in downtown Dallas.

Driscoll from Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr have stepped in to represent Symbotic Inc., an A.I.-enabled technology platform that focuses on increasing supply chain efficiency, and other defendants in a pending shareholder derivative lawsuit. The case, filed Oct. 2 in Massachusetts District Court by the Brown Law Firm on behalf of Stephen Austen, accuses certain officers and directors of misleading investors in regard to Symbotic's potential for margin growth by failing to disclose that the company was not equipped to timely deploy its systems or manage expenses through project delays. The case, assigned to U.S. District Judge Nathaniel M. Gorton, is 1:24-cv-12522, Austen v. Cohen et al.

Edmund Polubinski and Marie Killmond of Davis Polk & Wardwell have entered appearances for data platform software development company MongoDB and other defendants in a pending shareholder derivative lawsuit. The action, filed Oct. 7 in New York Southern District Court by the Brown Law Firm, accuses the company's directors and/or officers of falsely expressing confidence in the company’s restructuring of its sales incentive plan and downplaying the severity of decreases in its upfront commitments. The case is 1:24-cv-07594, Roy v. Ittycheria et al.

Amy O. Bruchs and Kurt F. Ellison of Michael Best & Friedrich have entered appearances for Epic Systems Corp. in a pending employment discrimination lawsuit. The suit was filed Sept. 7 in Wisconsin Western District Court by Levine Eisberner LLC and Siri & Glimstad on behalf of a project manager who claims that he was wrongfully terminated after applying for a religious exemption to the defendant's COVID-19 vaccine mandate. The case, assigned to U.S. Magistrate Judge Anita Marie Boor, is 3:24-cv-00630, Secker, Nathan v. Epic Systems Corporation.

David X. Sullivan, Thomas J. Finn and Gregory A. Hall from McCarter & English have entered appearances for Sunrun Installation Services in a pending civil rights lawsuit. The complaint was filed Sept. 4 in Connecticut District Court by attorney Robert M. Berke on behalf of former employee George Edward Steins, who was arrested and charged with employing an unregistered home improvement salesperson. The complaint alleges that had Sunrun informed the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection that the plaintiff's employment had ended in 2017 and that he no longer held Sunrun's home improvement contractor license, he would not have been hit with charges, which were dismissed in May 2024. The case, assigned to U.S. District Judge Jeffrey A. Meyer, is 3:24-cv-01423, Steins v. Sunrun, Inc. et al.

The case, assigned to U.S. District Judge Rodney Gilstrap, is 2:24-cv-00719, Alto Dynamics, LLC v. boohoo.com UK Limited.
