Intel Corp. made a bad first impression in its second patent infringement trial against VLSI Technology LLC.

The chip giant came out more pugnacious in the defense of its second patent infringement trial against Fortress Investment-backed licensing entity VLSI. But after suffering a $2.175 billion verdict last month, the company’s more aggressive strategy seemed to result mostly in self-inflicted wounds.
