Social Security attorneys have been lobbying for a cost-of-living adjustment to a $6,000 fee cap for years, but lawyers in the field say the pressures of the pandemic in conjunction with the stagnant limit have created a practice area that can no longer sustain smaller firms.

“It’s like a slow, grinding crisis,” said Deborah Spector, managing partner at Chicago-area Social Security disability firm Spector and Lenz.
