Araceli Martínez-Olguín, a former Bay Area kindergarten teacher who became a leading legal advocate for immigrants, was confirmed on Tuesday to the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California.

With the Senate initially deadlocked on a partisan vote of 48-48, Vice President Kamala Harris, an Oakland native, cast the deciding “aye” for Oakland civil rights attorney Martínez-Olguín. The deputy director at the National Immigration Law Center will fill the vacancy created when U.S. District Judge Jeffrey White took senior status in February 2021.
