Michael Risher, a Berkeley attorney involved in numerous privacy and constitutional law cases in Northern California, was named to the Alameda County Superior Court bench on Friday.

Risher has been affiliated with the American Civil Liberties Union Foundation of Northern California since 2006, first as a staff attorney, later as a senior staff attorney and now as of counsel. He has challenged a California law requiring police to collect DNA from anyone arrested on felony charges, fought to stop law enforcement from obtaining cellphone tower location information without a warrant and led the ACLU’s suit over a “ballot selfie” ban on voters revealing their marked election choices to anyone.
