Family loses claim against doctors for fatality

Two doctors weren’t to blame for the death of a patient, a jury found on Dec. 16, 2014. Natalia Collins, 29, died from anoxic encephalopathy in 2009. Her family claimed that Dr. Sarita Louys and Dr. Gary Weinstein wrongfully transferred her to a step-down unit in the hospital even though her general clinical picture was deteriorating. The defense argued that the decision to transfer her on May 14 was appropriate, given that a multidisciplinary team conducted a thorough and thoughtful discussion of Collins’ status, and she was six days stable. The defense also argued that cardiomegaly, poorly controlled diabetes and hypertension were important co-morbidities that played a factor in her overall condition.
