March is here, which means that a lot of Americans who love college basketball—or perhaps simply enjoy a bit of friendly bracket-based competition—are revving up for March Madness. There’s no doubt that the tournament is high-stakes for the teams on the hardwood. But without a thoughtful and diligent approach from employers, it can have serious consequences for workplaces.

Not only can the distraction of March Madness drag down office productivity, but it can prompt employees who think they can pick the top teams to create betting pools. These pools are often illegal, and may even bring up other indirect legal issues.
