Some big holidays are coming up. Are companies legally required to allow employees to take time off, even if there’s a backlog of work?

Frequently, employers encounter conflicts between an employee’s religious practices and the employer’s work schedule. While U.S. employers are not legally required to provide employees holiday leave, employers must provide reasonable accommodation for an employee’s religious beliefs and practices, which may include leave for religious observance or holidays. In addition to time off, required accommodations may include swapping schedules with another employee or otherwise altering an employee’s schedule; allowing employees to make up time lost due to religious need, extending rest periods during religious observations, and temporarily adjusting employees’ regular duties if they are in conflict with religious doctrine during specific holidays or religious observances.
