Lawyers facing the vengeance of Facebook Inc. got their first chance to plead their defense directly to a New York state judge on Tuesday, arguing that they didn’t violate the law by representing Paul Ceglia in his failed ownership lawsuit against the social media giant.

Facebook, represented by Kellogg, Huber, Hansen, Todd, Evans & Figel, sued lawyers at DLA Piper, Milberg and Lippes Mathias Wexler Friedman for malicious prosecution last October, alleging that they knew that Ceglia based his claim to an 84 percent stake in Facebook on a forged contract with Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg. Ceglia’s underlying lawsuit against Facebook was thrown out by a federal judge in Buffalo last year, and that decision was affirmed this week by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. Ceglia, meanwhile, is currently being pursued by U.S. marshals after fleeing a scheduled criminal trial related to the alleged forgery.
