A Brazoria County jury awarded $44 million to a 32-year-old man and his family based on claims that he sustained injuries when a crane collapsed at a Houston construction site.

The defendants in the negligence lawsuit were Kansas-based Berkel & Co., which the jury assigned 90 percent of the responsibility for damages, and Pennsylvania-based Maxim Crane Works, which the jury assigned the remaining 10 percent. In its May 6 verdict, the jury also included $8.5 million in punitive damages, against only Berkel.
