Gartner Inc.’s e-discovery software Magic Quadrant dropped earlier this week giving insight into what the leaders of the industry are doing best, and they types of organization in which they fit most naturally. But in addition to the rankings, Gartner also included an overview of trends moving the space. Legaltech News had an opportunity to discuss these trends with Gartner Research Director Jie Zhang about the trends and what they mean for the e-discovery space.

In terms of the most important developments the Magic Quadrant report identified, Zhang explained: “The mindset of having more control over e-discovery associated cost and risk is persistent. Data growth and new data sources (for example, Web content and social data) challenge existing data preservation practices and technology capabilities. With data either created in or migrated into the cloud, data sovereignty is increasingly becoming an important topic for information governance, risk and compliance as well as a challenge for e-discovery.”
