There is increasing concern from many sectors over government requests to find a way to work around encryption technology.

Entities ranging from the U.N. to major tech companies—including Apple—are warning that encryption needs to remain in place to protect individual and customer rights. Yet, government officials have complained that encryption has blocked their efforts in monitoring terrorists or those who plan to act out in nefarious activities.

A recent report for the U.N.'s High Commissioner for Human Rights, said “encryption and anonymity enable individuals to exercise their rights to freedom of opinion and expression in the digital age and … deserve strong protection.”
