With an unintentional call to the cops, a New Jersey robber was betrayed by his own technology. Scott Robert Esser was driving from Elizabeth to Stafford County, New Jersey, when he inadvertently dialed 911. Dispatchers were quick to characterize the call as a “butt dial,” according to NJ.com. But as they continued to listen, they heard two men discussing a burglary. As it happened, Branchburg police received a robbery call earlier that evening, during which dresser drawers were emptied and jewelry was stolen — in exactly the same manner as these two voices on the call were describing. The phone was traced to Esser, and two days later he was followed and pulled over on Garden State Parkway. A vehicle search resulted in the seizure of a number of items, including thousands of dollars in U.S. bonds and a handgun. Esser is in jail in lieu of $100,000 cash-only bail. — Richard Binder
