It’s the first week of fall and pumpkin spice lattes, mini chocolate bars and flu season are upon us. There’s a lot of incentive for employers to consider mandatory workplace flu vaccinations, according to Ivo Becica and Alexander Batoff of Obermayer Rebmann Maxwell & Hippel. Not only can the shots protect public health, but the Center for Disease Control has a target of a 90 percent vaccination rate by 2020. Here’s the need-to-know before you go jabbing employees:

Can we make flu shots mandatory? The short answer is yes, say the authors, but it comes with a lot of restrictions under both state and federal law. Reasonable accommodations must be made for employees with disabilities and sincerely held religious beliefs.
