Weeks after senior lenders successfully blocked a debt swap deal that might have averted bankruptcy for mining giant Arch Coal, the company filed for Chapter 11 protection early Monday in St. Louis federal court.

Arch, one of the country’s top coal miners, tapped a team at Davis Polk & Wardwell led by partner Marshall Huebner as bankruptcy counsel. Bryan Cave is serving as local counsel, led by senior counsel Lloyd Palans.
